The collection of photographic images within each Image Gallery represent the story of such brief moments on countless journeys and wanderings. In much the same manner as becoming a wilderness guide, photography emerged for me out of a longing to share the beauty and wisdom of the Earth, our relationship with it, and to each other. Beginnings

Photography for me, began in the doorway of an historic barn at the Hunewill Ranch in the fall of 1978. I stood there, bathed in golden-blue light that streamed through a myriad of slats and holes in the old walls and roof. It mixed with clouds of swirling dust in radiant shimmers and sparkles with each gust of wind. In that magic dance of light, I reached a turning point.

Earlier in my life I had trained as an artist in Chicago, but this scene seemed out of reach of my ability to paint or draw with the same impact. So, after years of resisting an inner call to bring along a camera, I walked back to the main house and placed an order for a simple 35mm outfit.

A few days later, just as I began to read the camera manual, a great Eastern Sierra windstorm blew in all night, with gusts probably reaching 70 to 80 mph. In the morning stillness, I stood again at that doorway, but the composition had changed considerably. The only picture to be had was a maze of old weathered boards piled on top of each other at my feet. Having stood for over 100 years, the old relic had finally endured its last storm. I could only muse at the irony, lift the camera and take my first picture.

What you will experience moving through these image collections is all that has unfolded from that doorway.
